Little White Car
Community Healthcare Transport
little white car
If you live in Upper Wensleydale the nearest major hospital is James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, approximately 50 miles from Hawes.
access to primary healthcare
Despite the best efforts of Little White Bus, attending hospital appointments using public transport is almost impossible, unless you can transport yourself, have local relatives, or very kind neighbours!
The lack of easily accessible access to primary healthcare is one of the major reasons why people sell up and move out of the traditional Dales’ villages.
This dilemma led to the creation in April 2023 of Little White Car.
This service provides health and social care community transport to any resident living in Upper Wensleydale who needs it.
Supported with a grant from North Yorkshire Council and driven entirely by volunteers we will take people from their homes to all the primary healthcare providers in the region and back again.
get in touch
Since launch, Little White Car has completed over 800 passenger journeys and we have travelled to Leyburn, Richmond, Northallerton, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Durham, Bishop Aukland and Harrogate.
We charge a modest flat rate for the return journey, which varies depending on the destination.
The car is big enough to carry a wheelchair, or other mobility aid, or passengers can use our own wheelchair if they need to.
So, if you live somewhere between Garsdale Station and West Witton, or Hawes and Redmire and you have a health or social care appointment that you can’t get to, please call 01969 667400, option 5 and let’s have a conversation to see how we can help you.
Little White Car relies entirely upon the kind support of North Yorkshire Council and the generosity of the Upper Dales Community Partnership.
